The Japanese Yen 円 (or ¥) is the official currency of Japan and is the third most traded currency in the world.

Japan is a cash-based economy. Nearly all transaction are paid with cash. Credit cards are non existent and the majority of shops, restaurants, and hotels don't even have the equipment to take cards.

Using ATMs in Japan

It is highly recommended to have at least 50,000¥ in your wallet when entering Japan. But what to do when you spent all that cash?

Most Banks and ATMs will only expect Japanese debit card. However, the ATMs within Japan Post Office or 7 Eleven will except debit/credit cards issued outside of Japan.

Japan Post Offices also provide simple banking services including international ATM transactions. Look for the Japan Post Bank ATMs.
